1.  Walid bin Attash AKA Khallad                 Yemen

Lost right leg while fighting against Ahmed Shah Massoud's Northern Alliance, bodyguard of Bin Laden, raised in Saudi Arabia and knew OBL since he was a child, part of Embassy bombings and failed USS The Sullivans plot, and masterminded USS Cole bombing



2.  Saif al-Adel          Egypt

High ranking member, former Egyptian military colonel, Embassy bombings, opposed 9/11 attacks, interim leader of Al-Qaeda after OBL's death, head of security committee, part of military committee, usually gave advanced/special training to operatives, Military Committee, Shura Council, fled to Iran after 9/11, arrested in April 2003 in Iran, released in 2015, now likely lives in Syria

3.  Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah   AKA Abu Muhammad al-Masri

Head of East African cells, mastermind of attacks, one of the bomb makers, opposed 9/11 attacks, Shura Council member, emir of al-Farouq said Abdullah was "most likely to identify potential suicide bombers," alleged mastermind of bombings

Killed in Iran on August 7, 2020



4.  Fazul Abdullah Mohammed          Comoro Islands

Leader of Al Qaeda in East Africa, mastermind of attacks, assisted on military committee, wrote reports for Al-Qaeda leadership, threw initial stun grenade, secretary for Wadih el Hage for an Al-Qaeda charity front, was sent to Lake Victoria to verify Abu Ubaidah al-Banshiri's drowning

Killed by Somali police on June 8, 2011

6.  Anas al-Liby  

Efficient operative with computer skills, conducted surveillance of Nairobi embassy with Ali Mohamed, in 1999 law enforcement searched his Manchester apartment but he fled and wasn't picked up until 2013

Died January 2015 while in American Custody



7.  Khaled al-Fawwaz    

Arrested after Embassy bombings for helping plan the bombing--financed the surveillance, held in Britain, OBL's media guy, led Nairobi cell, set up meetings with CNN



8.  Wadih el-Hage    

Replaced Fawwaz in Nairobi



9.  Muhsin Musa Matwalli Atwah   AKA Abu Abdul Rahman al-Muhajir

Explosives expert for Embassy bombings, later became chief bomb maker and taught advanced training in explosives and electronics in camps



10. Sheikh Ahmed Salem Swedan        Yemen/Kenya

Purchased the trucks used in the attacks

Killed in Pakistan in January 2009

11. Fahid Mohammed Ally Msalam          

Purchased SUV used by Tanzania cell, helped Swedan purchase Kenya bomb truck


12. Mohammed Sadeek Odeh          Tanzania

Arrested after flying from Nairobi to Karachi following bombings, set up a cover fishing business to finance Nairobi cell, made parts of bomb, bragged he supplied Black Hawk Down rockets


13. Khalfan Khamis Mohamed    

Assembled bomb for Tanzania bombing, took photos of bombing ruins

Convicted of 11 counts of murder



14. Mustafa Mohamed Fadhil                

Prepared TNT for Tanzania bombing


15. Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani        

Obtained bomb components



16. Jihad Mohammad Ali al Makki AKA Azzam       Saudi Arabia   

Nashiri's cousin, suicide bomber in Nairobi attack, bodyguard of OBL

17.  Mohamed Rashed Daoud Al-Owhali      Jordan

Supposed to be suicide bomber but survived Nairobi Embassy bombing, questioned by FBI because of his injuries

Convicted of 213 counts of murder



18. Hamdan Khalif Allah Awad AKA Ahmed the German           Egypt

Suicide operative for Dar es Salaam

19. Ibrahim Eidarous                Egypt

Fought in Afghanistan, member of Egyptian Islamic Jihad's Special Missions Committee due to his skill at forging passports, in 1996 took a leadership role in England, alleged to have sent statements to the press after bombings

Died of leukemia in 2008 

20. Adel Mohammed Abdel Magid Abdel Bari         Egypt

Applied for asylum in England in 1991, member of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, alleged to have sent statements to the press after bombings, extradited to USA in 2012

21. Ahmed Mohammed Hamed Ali  

Helped train Somalis in early 90s, served as Al-Qaeda's Chief of Paramilitary Operations in Afghanistan

Killed in a drone strike in Pakistan in 2010


22. Mohamed Suleiman Al Nalfi
